Town Hall: The Future of AI in Research

Where should the Coding Café go next?

A town-hall edition to open the 2026/27 AI theme. With a live Mentimeter poll we looked at how we use AI in research today, what worries us about it, which topics you would like to see in the coming sessions, and how the Coding Café should continue.

This session was a town hall to open the 2026/27 season, whose theme is AI. Instead of a talk, we used a live Mentimeter poll and an open discussion.

What we talked about

  • How people in the room use AI in their research and coding today: chat in the browser, assistants in the editor, or agents in the terminal
  • What worries us about it: data privacy, hallucinations, cost, reproducibility and losing our own skills
  • Which topics you would like to see in the coming sessions
  • How the Coding Café itself should continue: format, timing, level, and how you hear about sessions

What came out of it

Your suggestions shape the rest of the season. The first one is a special edition: the #30DayMapChallenge kick-off on 28 October.
